Following the new government lockdown the government has announced an extension to the ban on bailiff evictions for all but the most extreme cases till at least 21 February 2021.
The government first introduced a ban on tenant evictions in England in March last year, which was scheduled to end in September however due to continued COVID 19 lockdowns a new grace period was introduced to cover the festive period from the 11th December and 11th January - this has now been extended by a further six weeks subject to review
The Government says there will be exceptions in the "most egregious" cases – meaning evictions can still place for anti-social behaviour, illegal occupation, fraud or rent arrears of more than six months, as well as cases of domestic abuse.
Robert Jenrick MP said “At the start of this pandemic we made sure that the most vulnerable in society were protected. This winter, we are continuing in this vein and redoubling our efforts to help those most in need. We are extending the ban on bailiff evictions, helping to protect the most vulnerable renters. Landlords continue to be required to give 6-month notice periods to tenants until at least 31st March except in the most serious circumstances.”
The Government has also announced plans to launch a new mediation scheme between landlords and tenants facing court proceedings for eviction to try and help landlords and tenants reach a mutual agreement and keep people in their homes.
